The UN’s recent report describing worsening global climate change is the latest example in a catastrophic succession of humanity's self-inflicted blunders fostered by fragmented, willfully negligent economic development/opportunism.
Among the most egregious offenders is the U.S., where environmental protections are being dismantled while premature deathrates rise, wealth concentration subverts democratic institutions, and reckless development endangers life-support systems in pursuit of quick profits.
Although popular opposition to exploitative business ventures is growing, most elected officials appear unaware of - and unconcerned about - the multi-faceted interrelationships among industry, datacenters/AI, energy technology, public health, economic justice, and environmental quality. Yet, until these critical interconnections are diligently evaluated in setting and rigorously implementing public policy, human suffering and environmental harm caused by entrenched self-destructive practices will escalate.
Our shared future is being imperiled by the myopic dogma of unrestrained economic growth as the dominant measure of progress.
Instead, adopting integrated, multidisciplinary development policy is imperative. This strategy must apply the insights and analytical techniques of well-qualified experts from multiple sectors and disciplines in formulating an accountable program of governance to resolve our complex, highly intertwined development challenges. Essential program elements include systemic problem-solving, assuring equitable balance in shared benefits and responsibilities among stakeholders, reconciling short and long-term goals, and dynamic, course-correcting assessment methods.
