Under the auspices of MontionInfo, the Center for a Sustainable Coast is a designated “Stationkeeper” gathering data to be used in tracking and protecting the North Atlantic Right Whale [NARW]. This critically endangered marine mammal inhabits the Atlantic Ocean, migrating south along Georgia’s coast during calving season, running from December to March, when it is especially vulnerable.

MotionInfo’s Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) network can remotely and automatically warn vessels to slow down when a whale is detected in their vicinity. See the map depicting the seamless range of coverage provided by the system of Stationkeepers along the U.S. east coast.

Using a device provided by MontionInfo, at its office on Saint Simons Island, the Center will serve as one of numerous sites along the southeast coast where wireless signals will be received and relayed to a whale monitoring system that will warn the crews of ocean-going vessels about nearby right-whale locations.

Serious injuries and deaths of these magnificent animals are often caused by vessel collisions, as the right whale population plummets.
